21-Day Prayer Challenge
Day 1
“Get Ready”-Acts 10:2
“If you establish a prayer routine, your life will be
anything but routine. You will go places, do things, and meet people you have
no business going to, doing, or meeting. You don’t need to seek opportunity.
All you have to do is seek God. And if you seek God, opportunity will seek you.
“
Mark Batterson-Draw the Circle
Get Ready because January 1st is the start of the
2014 season. Jan 1st is not a run or a training session but nonetheless
it is the most important day of our 2014 season. This is the day you chose to
be ALL-IN. 222 days from now we will come in to preseason camp. During the next 222 days, you will be
challenged to grow spiritually as well as work to become the fittest you have ever been.
You will all be given many opportunities to lead as well as serve. At the start of preseason camp, you will look
back and see that it all started on Jan 1st and was worth it.
I want us, as a program, to start the 2014 season by committing
to this 21-Day Prayer Challenge. Earlier
I sent out a note, Ten Steps to Creating Life Goals by Mark Batterson. The first step starts with
Prayer. One of my prayers for 2014 is for our leadership. I cannot stress enough
the importance of our leadership. Our leadership is responsible for creating a
mindset that corresponds with our Foundational Principles. Developing our
leadership is an unselfish process that I hope will restore a sense of
ownership and responsibility in our program. Our Foundational Principles (see below) are clearly defined and each principle includes expectations
for our team’s character. These expectations determine what is acceptable on
the team and allow our team to maximize each player’s overall experience as
part of this program.
CU Men’s Soccer Foundational Principles
- Servant Leadership
- The Right Person
- Communicate Effectively
- Support the Mission of the Team
- Strive to Make Your Teammates Better
- Defining Moments
- Unspeakable Impact
- Dogged Pursuit of Excellence

Coach Huber gave me a
copy of “The Catalyst Leader by Brad
Lomenick to read during the break. It paints a great picture of what I am
looking for 2014 from our team/leadership.
“Like many young leaders, you want to make a difference. To
make your life’s work count. To leave the world (or your team!) better than you
found it. Becoming a catalyst leader means becoming a change maker-someone who
leverages his influence for the betterment of your world (or your team), the
collective good of others, and the greater glory of God. In order for you to
realize your dream, I believe you must:
- · Discover God’s unique calling on your life;
- · Embrace your true identity and share it with others;
- · Develop an insatiable hunger for a vibrant relationship with God;
- · Chase after a level of excellence that will stretch you and astonish others:
- · Learn to push through fear and take risks;
- · Root yourself in unchanging principles rather than shifting circumstances;
- · Create and cast a compelling vision for the future; and
- · Build bridges with others for the purpose of learning and cooperating “
Take some time to answer the following questions. Email me
your responses. Also, share your responses with one of your teammates.
·
What are
the 2 or 3 of our Foundational Principles that you think defined you for 2013?
·
What are some
of the changes that you feel are necessary for the whole team to achieve its
collective goals that will help change the culture of our overall program?
·
What is your
definition of effective leadership as a student athlete at CU? How would you
apply this definition to the 2014 off-season?
