Day 2

“Established by God”
In their hearts humans plan their own course but the Lord establishes their steps."
Proverbs 16:9

“ God is in the business of strategically positioning us in the right place at the right time, but it is up to us to see and seize those opportunities all around us all the time...God is great not just because nothing is too big for Him; God is also great because nothing is too small."
Mark Batterson-Draw the Circle

We all know what a selfish team looks like out on the field. We also know what it looks like to have a selfish team off the field. No one wants to play on a selfish team or even be part of a selfish program. I loved watching Notre Dame win the NCAA Division I National championship this year. I have never seen a coaching staff get a group of players (year in and year out!) to buy in to what the program is about than the ND coaching staff.  I have never seen a group of student athletes buy in to a program more than the ND players. You can see what they want to do as a team,  and how every player plays their role. It is great soccer. They have gifted and talented individual players but they are not about being great individuals-they are about being a great team.

The Right Person
Here is a quote from Dave Brandt-6 time NCAA Division III National Champion Coach at Messiah College about what kind of student-athlete he recruits:
"Emotional maturity, sefless, no ego, no attitude, willing to lead by serving, no matter how talented you are, you first have to be a good teammate, with a spirit of sacrifice, discipline, and respect. Absent those qualities, you can't play for us. Zero bad apples; we don't burden the right people with the wrong people for any reason." I love this. It is certainly a goal for me as a coach to create an environment like this.

All IN by Mark Batterson: “At its core, sinfulness is selfishness. It is enthroning yourself-your desires, your needs, your plans-above all else. You may still seek God, but you don’t seek Him first.”

My prayer today for us this year is that we seek Him first and we seize all of the opportunities for the next 221 days!
