Support the Mission of the Team
"Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is neither fit for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.
Luke 14:34-35
“When I was in high school, I seriously considered joining the marines; this was when they first came out with commercials for the “few, the proud, the marines.” What turned me off was that in those advertisements, everyone was always running. Always. And I hate running.
But
you know what? I didn’t bother to ask if they would modify the rules for me so
I could run less, and maybe also do fewer push-ups. That would have been
pointless and stupid, and I knew it. Everyone knows that when you sign up for
the Marines, you have to do whatever they tell you. They own you.
Somehow
this realization does not cross over to our thinking about the Christian life.
Jesus didn’t say that if you wanted to follow Him you could do it in a lukewarm
manner. He said, “Take up your cross and follow me.”
Jesus
isn’t just making this cute little analogy here. He is addressing those who
aren’t willing to give everything, who won’t follow Him all the way. He is
saying that lukewarm, halfhearted following is useless, that it sickens our
souls. He is saying that this kind of salt is not even fit for the manure
pike.”

Chan-Crazy Love
I love being part of a team. There is nothing like it. One of my favorite movies is Miracle. For those who are not familiar with the movie, it is about the US Hockey team that won the Gold medal in the 1980 Olympics. Getting the Gold medal and beating the Russians was a great part but it was how the team came together and got there that interested me. As a
member of the Cornerstone University Men’s Soccer Program, you only have 4
years to be part of something special. It is kind of like life. You go through
this journey together with the great people that God has put in your life. That
could be your family, or your friends and yes, even your teammates. There is no
doubt that you will go through good times and bad times, but you go through it
together.
I hope that all of you are setting goals for yourselves as well as
for the team. More importantly, I hope these goals SUPPORT THE MISSION OF THE TEAM. Some of you might be setting goals like that you will score 10 goals
this season, or that you will start every game and some of you will set a goal
to play Varsity. Whatever your goals are, you have to have a team to achieve
them. You have to SUPPORT THE MISSION
OF THE TEAM as you go through this season. Things like the Grassrootsoccer
Tournament, our Night of Nets event, and yes, even our character off the field
are all part of SUPPORTING THE
MISSION OF THE TEAM. I like what Francis Chan said, “I didn’t bother to
ask if they would modify the rules for me so I could run less and maybe do
fewer push-ups.” What kind of team would we be if guys were only interested in
modifying the mission of this 2013 team so they could get what they want out of
this season?
If you are going to SUPPORT
THE MISSION OF THE TEAM, you can’t be lukewarm. Lukewarm guys are the
ones that want to do less not more. Lukewarm guys can’t be servant leaders
because they are selfish. Lukewarm guys want to wear the jersey without
earning it. Lukewarm guys want to play soccer but don’t want to honor God
with their gifts and talents. Lukewarm guys will always let the team down
because they don’t want to go through the hard times. Lukewarm guys don’t know
the meaning of Kopion. Lukewarm guys don’t even know the mission of the team!
Don’t be that guy. I certainly would not want to step on the field with that
guy.

“In the end, our ability to perform under pressure is critical.
In that light, it really comes down to two things. No.1. The team process, all
of us being able to work together and perform productively in the way that we
need to do to win. No.2. We use the term ‘mental toughness’ a lot, and to me
that term means doing the right thing for the team when things aren’t right for
you -- maybe a guy that’s not getting the playing time he hoped for, maybe he
isn’t getting as many opportunities to do whatever it is he’d like to do. We
all have to give up a little bit of something in this sport, and mental
toughness is going out there and doing what’s best for the team even though
everything isn’t going exactly the way you want it to. That’s what defines
mental toughness in my mind. “ Bill Belichek
Sorry, just had to use Bilichek stuff again.
